Fiery Vision: The Life and Death of John Brown
Published in School & Library Binding by Scholastic (April, 1997)
Author: Clinton Cox
Average review score:

An Outstanding Biography on a Most Misunderstood Man
From this book you will read about the life and times in which John Brown lived in as well as a time when people of the black race were subjugated to a life of slavery. John Brown's religious convictions as well as his belief in the constitution enflamed his desire to fight the tyranny of slavery and as a result could be considered the catalyst for the Civil War. This book was well written yet easy to read. If you have read this book or have an interest in this subject I would also recommend the book "Cloud Splitter"

First Ladies
Published in Unknown Binding by Bt Bound (March, 1994)
Author: Susan Clinton
Average review score:

A thematic look at First Ladies from Washington to Clinton
This Cornerstones of Freedom volume on the "First Ladies" mentions every woman who served as the hostess for the President, even for the bachelor James Buchanan or widowers like Thomas Jefferson and Martin Van Buren. The only reason there is not a photograph or painting of every First Lady from Martha Washington to Hilary Clinton is because Margaret Taylor spent most of her time upstairs in the private rooms of the White House and no photographs or paintings of her exist.

Susan Maloney Clinton provides a nice collection of anecdotes about the various First Ladies. The first part of the book outlines the role of the First Lady in the broadest tersm, from the austerity of Edith Wilson to the serene loveliness of Julie Tyler, from the desire of privacy of Martha Washington to the publicity of Betty Ford's breast cancer, and from the public whirlwind that was Eleanor Roosevelt to the tragic Jane Pierce who never recovered from the death of her son two months before her husband's inaugural.

However, the last half of the book focuses chronologically on those First Ladies who acted as working partners in their husbands' presidencies, beginning with Abigail Adams and ending with Hilary Clinton's work as the head of the effort to reform health care. Clearly, in terms of public perception, things changed dramatically after Eleanor Roosevelt, especially from the time Jackie Kennedy was in the White House until now, where many Americans can tell you what was the pet issue of each First Lady, such as Lady Bird Johnson on highway beautification and Barbara Bush on literacy.

This thematic approach works well for this topic and young students research the First Ladies in general will find this a useful book. However, it will be a hit-or-miss proposition with regards to how much useful information they can find about any given First Lady.

Global Focus: A New Foreign Policy Agenda, 1997-1998
Published in Paperback by Interhemispheric Resource Center (June, 1997)
Authors: Tom Barry, Martha Honey, N.M.) Resource Center (Albuquerque, and Institute for Policy Studies
Average review score:

Great Resource
This is a great book. Especially for those (like me) who needed to understand foreign policy 101. So many issues that I've heard discussed in the media and in congress i.e. Exim (Export/Import) Bank, I would have been clueless about, wondering who are they and what the heck do they do????, except for this book. I first discovered it on a library shelf, but decided I needed my own copy. I refer back to it often to refresh my memory on details when I need to. And there is an excellent source of other resources in the back of the book to expand your knowledge in many areas. Anyone who is not aware of how our policies affect the world needs this book. And unfortunately that means most American citizens need to read it.

A Survivor From The L.A. Wars
The electrifying sexual imagery from one who has survived the gender wars ignites the reader's imagination and suggests ways of healing. This is both disturbing and enlightening. Although now residing in Northern California, Michelle T. Clinton is a survivor of the Los Angeles Wars, giving countless readings at Beyond Baroque as the Queen of the Los Angeles Poetry Scene. This work is a warning to those who revel in their complacency, and is a call to arms for those who dare. Profound. Moving. A historical document from a soul survivor. She is Los Angeles' gift to Northern California...and the world

The Great Whitewater Fiasco: An American Tale of Money, Power, and Politics
Published in Paperback by Ballantine Books (Trd Pap) (October, 1994)
Author: Martin Louis Gross
Average review score:

Explains the Clinton corruption in a simple way
It's too bad this book is out of print. You should try to order it used or see if your library has it. Gross writes with a very no nonsense style. He didn't try to win a writing prize with this book like James Stewart did with his Whitewater book. And, of course, Gross isn't a hard core Clinton apologist/worshipper like Gene Lyons and Joe Conason. This book explains the relationship between the Clintons and the McDougals, goes through the task of explaining the transactions, and by the end of the book leading the reader to conclude that Whitewater, contrary to Clinton supporters, was a scandal that should have dethroned their king.
